Why Don't Perpetual Motions Work?

As a physics teacher, I planned a cool lesson plan about the perpetual motion machine. Let's say this lesson has reached far beyond the 18 original 8th graders that sat in the class. I must also add that some of the best ideas and exquisite animation are not my doing.
